Jamaica: vinyl is done

18 January 2008

Great article in the guardian. The key selectors have all switched to CD. The classic 7" vinyl market was primarily for US/European/Japanese collectors. The locals don't buy vinyl. Many tracks never got pressed to vinyl anyway. "The reduction in vinyl production in the West Indies has dramatically affected the way I access music," explains the legendary DJ - or selector - David Rodigan, host of the weekly Rodigan's Reggae show on London's Kiss 100 FM. "In a nutshell, vinyl has ... more...

Vinyl will outlive the CD

Matador and other labels include coupons in record packaging that can be used to download MP3 versions of the songs. Matador's Patrick Amory called the coupon program "hugely popular." Numark sold more than 100,000 turntables in 2004. Pressing plants are said to be ramping up. But its still very small boutique stuff, let's be fair. The fact is, that the infrastructure needed to cut masters and replicate copies is falling apart. There are NO replacement parts available for the lathes, ... more...

The GEMA makes no profit: all earnings minus administrative costs are payed to domestic and international authors whose works were performed. Monitoring of the German airwaves is excellent (for [[Performance Royalties]], and non-German authors can expect to actually see money sent via GEMA to their own organization (BMI ... more...

Producing for Vinyl

Stereo information is written into the vinyl by laying in each channel on the banks of a V shaped groove. One channel is laid in with the phase reversed. Thus in-phase signals result in the needle moving horizontally, and out-of-phase signals result in vertical movement. Stereo signals are by definition not in phase with each other (not exactly identical). Devices like choruses, delays, vocoders or pitch shifters often create deliberately out of phase information to throw a large stereo image. ... more...

Mastering Houses

5 December 2004

Most pressing plants will do mastering too, but usually its best to go to a specialist. Also many of the pressing plants send it elsewhere to get mastered anyway. The demands of pumping up a sound system to 120dB + demands extreme accuracy in the low end. Its best to get someone who knows and understands this to translate your tracks onto vinyl. The Mastering Engineer eq's and compresses in order to get the hottest possible level and best sound. ... more...

Acetates

This is pretty old school at this point. Not every mastering facility does them, but most do. Using the same cutting lathe, he cuts a rough acetate, playable 50 or so times. Its a large hunk of metal with an acetate coating. This is a great learning experience, not to mention the insane intensity of dropping your exclusive dub plate for the drooling massive. Example price : $30 for 10" , $50 for 12". Personally, its over. CDR or laptop. more...

Choosing A Plant

5 December 2004

Most Pressing plants will do the mastering if necessary, but for quality, it is usual to Master at a lab that specializes in that. You will see many offers of package deals to do the whole thing. Sometimes these are very good, but often it is just convenient, not cheaper. Shop around. You will be required to place a deposit, but you can structure it so that you pay the plant after you get money back from the distributor. All ... more...
