Great article in the guardian. The key selectors have all switched to CD. The classic 7" vinyl market was primarily for US/European/Japanese collectors. The locals don't buy vinyl. Many tracks never got pressed to vinyl anyway. "The reduction in vinyl production in the West Indies has dramatically affected the way I access music," explains the legendary DJ - or selector - David Rodigan, host of the weekly Rodigan's Reggae show on London's Kiss 100 FM. "In a nutshell, vinyl has ... more...

Snocap, the music-licensing company best known for being the follow-up act of Napster founder Shawn Fanning, has cut its staff by 60 percent, a spokeswoman for the company said Thursday evening. That's funny, I only yesterday got my tracks up on SNOCAP. I think they would do much better if MySpace wasn't such an interface-peice-of-shit. They are what is stopping them from easily getting the tracks up. Eventually I just pasted the SNOCAP store directly into my profile. ((http://myspace.com/timeblind)) Anyway, ... more...

Distribution is a pain, and probably the main bottleneck in independant music. Sorry distributors, but we look forward to when its all electronic distribution. But its not their fault. The problem is as usual the glut of product, and the impossibility of distributors to store all of that glut and move it to the shops. The money and the product often gets stuck at the distributors, and everybody (labels, distributors and stores) suffer because of it. When distributors go bankrupt ... more...

Thinking of starting a label ? Want to put out lots of records this year, really make your mark ? Hey, maybe its YOU that's killing the scene, man. There's more music being created than at any time in human history. There is a huge glut of labels and release on the market. Everybody seems to have their own label, sometimes several. Small stores cannot risk ordering very much stuff or they will get stuck with immoveable back stock. Small ... more...

_USA_ You do not, in general, buy directly from labels. Things would get out of hand. Most stores refuse to buy direct except from friends or locals. There is enough trouble trying to get everybody paid, the whole system needs to keep the number of invoices down. Get a TAX-ID number. $10-20 from your state Comptroller's office. If you are shipping out of state (the usual), there is no sales tax (so far), but you still need a Tax-ID number ... more...

Once upon a time this resource centered itself on the mechanics of starting your own label. I encourage you to think carefully before starting down this path. There are too many labels out there right now, the market is shrinking and for you to get the label properly noticed and accepted, you should be able to undertake this step with a proper and informed focus. Starting a label is definitely not something for an industry beginner to undertake. You should ... more...

In order to best understand distribution, you should take a look at the listings and/or websites from the distributors themselves. You can access them via the web at the addresses listed below. This shows descriptions of each record with wholesale prices. US domestic usually sells for 3.49 to 4.00. You sell it to them for 2.75 to 3.25. There are exceptions, try not to be one of them for now. If you press on more expensive vinyl and need to ... more...
